Hi Guys.
Checking in again with my latest build - the Dr. Boogey.  I built it per the files here: http://www.4thlevelmedia.com/stompboxes.html and the schematic here: http://geocities.com/electrictabs/dr.boogey.png.  The only subs I made were even valued pots (25k-L for Mid and 250k-A for Treble).  This was my first build with a tone stack but it worked the first time I plugged it in!

Notes:  My testing tonight was with the circuit layed out on my clipboard - careful not to ground things together...
It was fairly noisy (buzzing) in my 8" SS test amp - but I could hear that there were good tones somewhere in there.  When I put it into my rig (and into the clean channel of my Peavey XXX amp) it was completely buzz free (yay!).  I cranked up the gain - adjusted the volume to unity - then futzed with the tone stack until I found something I liked.  I LOVE the sound this thing makes.  Totally different from all my other distortion builds.  This one has power when palm muting and is very aggressive while power-chord chugging.  I was just starting to think my BSIAB2 was my best build yet - NOT ANY MORE!!  Thanks to ROG and Electrictabs for their excellent work (as usual) and Buck for layout and PCB.  This community is awesome.  Now I just have to wait for my 1590BB to show up so I can get this beast into my rig permanently!!

Thanks again.

Well done !

The only annoying thing to me is how inconsistent J201s are. I had an MPF102 in Q1, which tamed down the noise a great deal, but when I popped a J201 in for a full compliment, the noise was up, but so was the bass. I was really chugging at that point.  8)
I'll eventually sit down and get a set together that sound great, but I don't have time right now. I've got a Professor Tweed that I'd like to have done by this weekend.

I had the same deal with my new little "Classic 30" sim, I couldn't get one of the J201's to bias
had to try four different ones ( two brands ) to get one to work !
Once or twice, I've come across some "suspect" trim pots too ... !

Please could some1 do a veroboard layout for this, I'd love to try it and have half a ton of the stuff.  I'll be ur best friend! lol

I'll have to agree that this one is kinda sensitive to the FETs used, and their individual characteristics. Anyhow, it's a keeper!  :icon_cool:

All boxed up and works GREAT!!! ;D  I must have got lucky with my jfets - no humming on full gain (which is where I like this pedal best!).

One thing still puzzles me...when I try this effect on my solid state amp (little Ibanez TB15D) it makes strange sounds (like op-amp whine...but there's no op amps in it...).  When I turn the knobs, the frequency dithers then comes back near the original whine.  Very strange since it works perfectly plugged into my tube amp rig.  Grounding?  Power? (When I test my effects, I use a rechargeable 9V with a DC jack clip - usually works fine...just checked and it's still reading 9.2V/0.65mA).  Any thoughts?

Thanks again for the awesome circuit...this community is awesome!

Viva Dr. Boogey!  :icon_wink:

Yep, that one is definitely a keeper. Do you have any favorite settings on it yet? I could share mine if anyone is interested.

mydementia

Yes - definitely a keeper!!  I'm finding that I'd like a bit more bass...or the bass doesn't have a deep enough effect.
Here's how I'm presently loving my Boogie in a box:

These settings give me a great nu-rock/metal sound that works great for a lot of my original stuff.  Sortof old Chevelle meets American Head Charge and Mudvayne- awesome chugging - awesome pinch harmonics - without the flabby/weak bottom end.  I'd be very interested in other folks settings.  I'm also trying to record some clips - but so far, my condenser mic is really dark when pointed at my Peavey XXX...to be continued...

Here's the settings that I like the best (7:00 is full CCW and 5:00 is full CW)

Level 12:00
Presence 3:00
Gain 5:00
Low 5:00
Mid 9:00
High 10:00

I like these settings for when my hi/lo gain switch is in either position. It has slightly less distortion when on the low gain setting.
