Hi All,

How much distortion should you get if you remove D4 and D5 (clipping diodes) from the BOSS DS-1 circuit?

Haven't tried it, but you would probably don't get much distortion at all. I think it would work more like a clean boost if you remove them.

Hmmmmm....that means that something is messed up. With the diodes out, still lots of distortion and it sounds fizzy and horrible.....damn it. I had it modded and good....but was I happy....NoOooooooOOoo. I had to go messing around and screw it up. <sigh>

Oh well....try, try again.

if there's enough gain, it will hit the rails every time you hit a chord.

and i wouldn't be damn bit surprised if it had enough gain.

maybe reduce the feedback resistor, or increase its path to ground?

I tried that taking D4 and D5 out too. A lot more clean headroom, a lot more volume, but still a lot of distortion if you turn the Gain way up.

Sometimes it's the opamp you use as well. I run my Guv'nor (which is kind of similar to the DS-1 at a high level) pedal without diodes as it has a ton of gain with the mods I put on it, but I tried a dozen opamps before I got the one I liked. I could distort without the diodes.

Looks like I may have fixed the problem. I was seaching the forum for mods to increase bass response. Increased C2 and C3 from .047 to .068 and .47 to .68 and the sound got very blown out.....almost like it was broken. Real woofy and ugly. Changed them back and I'm back to square one......looking to increase bass...lol

MOJOTRON with what OpAmp did you use in your guvnor?

(an opa2134 was recommended to me)
