I threw one of these (http://www.geocities.com/tpe123/folkurban/fuzz/snippets.html#lofomofo) together last night just to see what it sounds like...not quite what I expected.  While it cut all the base out of the signal, it was still clean.  I was hoping for more of a crackly-staticy-tinny kind of lo-fi vibe.  I notice that the gain pot has no effect on the output sound - maybe because I couldn't find a 1N5817 diode...

Subs: I used a 1N4001 diode and a 1M gain pot (since I didn't have a 500k pot - shouldn't matter).

Anyone else built this critter?  Similar sound results?  I built this with a heavy-duty momentary switch - I was envisioning using this for a couple intros and maybe for transitions in one of my songs...but we'll see...

Wrong diode. The 1N4001 won't sub for the 1N5817. You need a Schottky signal diode there - just about any Schottky will do. Mind you, the sound when working properly is still more 'overdrive' than 'crackly'. Pot substitution may well make a difference in this circuit.

Small Bear started carrying schottky diodes recently, they're also good for protection in pedals from reverse polarity power, because they have a lower voltage drop than Si diodes.  You just stick one in series with the power coming in.

If you build it right, it will sound like crap just like it was advertised to. It sounds like the cheapest stuff you put together out of a yard sale. Mine ended up as the One Knob Fat Fuzz (something like that), since I had absolutely no use for that tone, but to each his own.

I picked up the right diode at the local surplus store...sounds similar to the 1N4001 and I still don't notice any change rotating the gain pot.  Since this lo-fi isn't really what I had in mind...I think I'm about to punt.  At least I haven't boxed it up yet...and I had nearly all the parts laying around.
Thanks for your input.
