I think you use something called the "millenium bypass"

It's simpler and hasn't failed on me once. But make sure you have the right value output pot.

(shoot, posted late ...  above is the same solution. And since the above circuit uses a 500k volume pot it probably won't work right away...)

I came across a simple schematic on www.experimentalistsanonymous.com from Joe Davisson
It uses a 2n3904 transistor and a 330k resistor to light the led, very simple and effective.
You can find it in the Scematic archive under  Buffers/Switchers/Mixers and Routers.
(don't know if I've got permission top post it here...)
