Just curious,

I was going to build a double boost pedal using an opamp circuit for a volume boost and  a rangemaster clone with an OC44 for a treble boost. I normally use a boost at the end of the signal chain for a solo/level boost and have no experince with treble boosters. Do they sound good at the end of the chain or am I wasting my time with having the two in one box ?

This is pretty easy, just replace thte .005 uf input capacitor with a larger value.  I've seen .1 uf used for a more flat boost.

EDIT:
Whoops, just reread the post.  You want to shove both circuits in one box...?  I personally put my rangemaster first, because last it boosts the noise from all your other pedals.  I'm guessing a flat boost would be the same way but I dunno.

Different opinions of course, but in my experience, using a Rangemaster with full frequency response (bigger input cap) doesn't sound very good. It was designed as a treble booster and sounds best as one, IMHO. Good idea to use two different boosters, each designed for a particular purpose.
I would put the boosters late in the chain, otherwise they risk overdriving other pedals that weren't meant to produce overdrive.

Regarding the sound of treble boosters, it depens a lot on what kind of amp they are used infront of. A treble booster needs a tube amp that it can push into overdrive. If the amp is solid state or a tube amp with too much headroom, all you get is a weak harsh sound. Just my opinion of course...

^Yeah there is always the issue of having the boosters drive the pedals behind it too much...but if you put them afterwards its generally noisier I've noticed.  And a tube amp for a treble booster is a must.

Hey Melanhead,

Give it a try.  I've actually got something similar on the bench at the moment.  I came up with an opamp boost that sounds killer with one of my Rangemasters so I'm going to put them both in one box.  The Rangemaster definitely sounds waayyyy better first.  I'm going to wire it up with a footswitch for each so you can have either/or/both.  With the Rangemaster second, the treble boost is way too much with both on.  Having the RM first allows the darker opamp boost to filter the treble boost of the RM.  I also like to use a .01uf cap for the input of the RM so it's not as trebly.  It's a really versatile boost/overdrive that sounds killer through my '64 Fender Princeton and my 65 London combo (think AC15/Marshall 18-watt).

Keep us posted,

It's all about signal flow...

cool, thanks guys! ... I may try something ... I guess I'm worried about having both boosts at the end of the chain ... Worth a try ... I have an old BB box I can use to try it ....
