More wood enclosure Pics

Here are some wood enclosures I've been working on. I got on a kick and made a few of them while I was at it.
They are all not quite finished yet but I thought I'd post some photos anyway.



"Brownie" Manual wah with resonance and frequency control

A Gilsonite stained oak enclosure, for Jimmy54 as well.



An Apple wood vibrato and reverb switcher for my Twin Reverb clone.


Here are some that need a home. Still in the process of finishing these.

Where'd you get the knob on the first one?

Yeah I wish I could get more of those knobs. It's a 50's model I got from my grandfathers stash years back... I have a few others that are truly cool. I have one that's about 3 inches across. My grandfather was a sientist and had a lot of large ekg, eeg and those kind of monitoring devices. He had this one in the shop for years that had literally 50 knobs on it. Problably sitting in some landfill now! ARgh!!!

What the heck is "Gilsonite"?!

Gilsonite is my secret recipe...just kidding. It's actually roofing tar..well...the same thing. It's been used for decades and was in a lot of stains and finishes. The main thing is that it's clear and not a pigment.

I do shielding with aluminum tape folded over and overlapped a 1/4" to make a solid ground connection between pieces.
I do the bottoms differenly depending. Some have matching wood bottoms, some have sheetmetal bottoms. Some have plastic sheeting, 1/4" birch ply...  Sort of depends on the size and which wood I use.

The price will be about $25 for the small ones.
You have to figure that the finishing takes about a week to complete, about 6 coats of finish at least, sanding in between each coat.
Then you throw in the wood working time...

Here's what the inside looks like.



Some of them have thicker or thinner walls so I route out the wall thickness just where the jacks will possibly be.
The one pictured doesn't have the routing yet.

There is a 3-4" area along the sides where the jacks can go depending on your Layout.
There cherry boxes will age and get that nice warm orange color over time. I like to leave them in the sunlight to "tan" them.

I am going to tackle a wood wah pedal some time. Just a matter of getting the mechanics worked out.

Hi John, just spotted the post with the new photos in.  Those enclosures are looking great.  The finishing is spectacular.  Can't wait to get them and start fitting the circuits in.  Think I'm going to go for an orange squeezer, java boost or foxx tone machine and some modulation effect, for the 3-in 1 enclosure.  I think I'll re-house my EH worm into the other one.

Your pedal shells should be there soon. I'm curious to see them when you get the circuits inside and all finished up.

I have a few new ones built now as well. I'll wait to post them until they are finished. Man it takes a while to get these right. I figure they have closer to 15 light coats of finish, Each coat gets sanded down then recoated to get the finish super smooth. Then I buff the finished pedal with steel wool and paste wax a couple times, then 2 coats of just wax and a lot of elbow grease. Takes about a week or more depending. But they look nice when it all done I think.
