The dock connector was introduced with the 3rd generation iPods. With the dock connector the iPod can be charged, connected to a PC via USB or Firewire, connected to a stereo via line-out or connected to a serial device and controlled via the Apple Accessory Protocol. How about turning your ipod into a high capacity field recorder?

I am going to try a bunch of things, line out, video out, power to charge it, draw power from it, microphones, headphone amplifiers, 386 amps...

who knows. Now that I can hook it up to the breadboard!

I'm afraid that would involve something at the software/firmware level, rather than any breadboard tinkering. Of course I'd love to be able to! I'd be a bit too squeamish about frying my 60G video iPod to go experimenting with little bits connected to it's intimate area. I'm too busy listening to the Ricky Gervais podcast anyhow!

Gee, right off the bat I figurered you were after a "live performance" dock, with foot controller.
Thats what I would do...
My band, like many others, is using an iPOD for backing tracks. One channel has click track, the other backing tracks.
A robust all metal dock with 1/4" jacks and a remote foot controller would be a cool project. Useful too.

I now see the field is much wider.
