um
er
which end is which on these buggers? Is the top is the cathode?
(Do they look weird? What's with the blue line?)
They were a lot cheaper than the last bunch I got.
I thought I could tell then I had a crisis of confidence, in the middle of my Speaker Saturation Simulator.

If you have a meter use diode check or measure the diodes resistance. It should be an open circuit in one direction and have a voltage reading (diode check), or a low resistance measurement in the other direction. when you get a reading, the end that the neg. meter lead is hooked to is the cathode.
Without a meter, use a battery/resistor/LED set up. Hook up your LED so that it will light when you hook the battery up. Then put the diode in the circuit. the LED should only light with the diode in one direction. The end closest to the neg. battery lead is the cathode (when the LED lights).
