I got a few unlabeled diodes and want to know what I can do to know if they're usable in effects. They look like a common Si diode.

Both of my multimeters have a setting to measure forward voltage threshold.  I've also been using it to measure Mosfets for clipping.   :icon_cool:

It's the setting with a diode symbol? I have this one in my multimeter too. How much voltage should I get to know if it's an usable diode?

It should show an open circuit one way and a 200-800-ish number with the diode the other way 'round.

I measured 905-908 for all 8 diodes 1N914 I have. Are those ok?

Thanks a lot for the ifo. I will measure all the unmarked diodes I have.

I usually get around .3v for GE's .7v for SI's and 1.7v for LED's   :icon_cool:

Somewhat off topic but I have a bunch of zener diodes that I've scavenged, typically 15 to 24 volt versions. They have the normal 0.7 or so volt forward voltage drop and their rated reverse drop. Can they be used in place of normal Si diodes as clippers?
