I was gonna ask what it had in common with the Rat (internally compensated op amp, no "extra inv-to-gnd leg", tone control maybe?) but who cares? It sounds great! Nice playing too. :icon_wink:

One simple mod you might try is converting the tone control to Mark Hammer's "T" configuration. Connect the cap to the wiper and ea end lug as "input and output". This way the tone control won't affect the volume.

Thanks Doug, I may give that a try ... Yup,  not really a Rat anymore ... It started that way though ... just plugged in a 4558 chip and removed what I didn't need, I'm a minimalist  :icon_mrgreen:

The frequency rolloff in the inverting input has been my focus lately, for a Rat clone I'm doing. I noticed you used 47ohms with .68uF here. How is the freq response in this? I hear a lot of mids in the clip, but is that a characteristic of the opamp or a result of your selected RC network? I'm wanting reduce that RC network to one from the two in the stock circuit, and haven't chosen the value for it yet. Any suggested values, perhaps you've tried other combo's there?

Definetly socket that cap and try different ones.  That has a lot to do with the Character of the distortion.

This set up rolls off around 500Hz.   :icon_cool:

I think it's more a characteristics of my Marshall, it's modded for lotsa mids :) ... This pedal has less mids than a TS type circuit. I tried using the combined Rat values for the RC network but found it too bottom heavy. I ended up using the 47 ohm res and socketing the Cap ... I lowered it and did the ear test 'till it was right for me.

That sounds great, Bob.  Wow.  I need to make me one of those.  Finding the time these days is the fun part...lol.  Good work on this one.  It seems to be very Marshall friendly.

Ah, that makes sense. Sometimes its easy to forget how much the amp contributes to a stompboxes sound. You said you started off with the combined values, so I'm assuming you started with 4.7 + 2.2 for a 6.8uF cap? I think thats where I'm going to start off, and tweak by ear. I'm using a Vox amp with a LOT of highs, and I wanted to lower the freq response of the Rat. My stock Rat is still my fav pedal, but I wanted to try reducing the high freq boost it gives and let that tone be controlled by the tweaked BMP tone stack I put into this clone. I need the lower freq to be there so the tone control can be useful.

I just noticed that strip No 4 is free on your layout, so you could "tack on" the small
minimum setting resistor to the gain pot by using that strip .... !!

Nice Playing ( again !! )
