Second unsuccesful project - help with schematics

Hello everyone,

I'm a beginner when it comes to building stompboxes and electronics. I've been reading a lot about wiring, schematics on pages like geofex, beavisaudio, electro music,..., yet I still can't finish a project succesfully. The first one was an Atari punk console (which I plan of building again) and now there's the simple Noise 567 aka sicbox.

The schematic I used was this one.  And I changed a LDR with a potentiometer, which could also be a problem.

Now my questions.

  • I connected the + side of the battery to Vcc+, and the negative to the - of the signal input jack, - of the output jack and to the ground. Was that ok?
  • Another thing I did was change the LDR with a 100k potentiometer, wiring terminal 1 to ground, terminal 3 to number 5 on the schematics, and 2 to number 6 on schematics. Could someone please explain what I did here wrong?
  • The 10uF capacitor should have the longer + wire connected  to the signal input, right?

the short legs of the capacitors go in/out...(the side with the stripe)..

tie all grounds together...in-/out-/battery -

try pin 5 to pot 3, pot 2 to pin6 (try leaving pot 1 off for now) ..then join pot 2 to 22nf to 7 and ground.

depending on what value ldr was meant to be there will determine what pot to use...try a 1M....have fun!.. ;)

Sounds OK to me. Just make sure that you connect ALL of the "grounds" together. Including the one from the circuit!

This may be a problem. I believe that in this situation, you want to connect the 100K potentiometer as a variable resistor. You can do that by connecting Pin 5 of the NE567 to BOTH pins 1 & 2 of the pot. Then, you would connect Pin 6 of the NE567 to pin 3 of the pot.

The LONG leg of the electrolytic capacitor indicates the "+" side. Also, the cap should have markings on it to indicate which is the (-) side. Usually in the form of a silver/grey stripe on the casing.

It does look like those caps are either backwards or should be non-polarized.  I don't think (?) that would be a deal breaker, though.  It should work fine up until the caps decide they've had enough of the reverse bias and fall apart.

I think that this is fine when dealing with the audio signal, but I did this once with the speed control pots on a 555 timer and they didn't work correctly until I removed the jumper between the unused terminal and the center terminal.

Thanks for your help. I'll try building it tomorrow, will tell you how it went.  :)

Ok I tried it again today. First I wired the pot like Govmnt_Lacky  said. When that didn't work, i switched the capacitors (like ashcat suggested) and connected the pot like deadastronaut suggested. Sadly, no sound.
I might have used a burned the 567 chip, since I used the old one from the 'unsuccesful project'. But it I don't know. I think it's better I try my luck with the atari punk console again (or if you have an easier suggestion?) and stop trying with the Noise567.

I spoke too soon, I can hear something...! :) After I switched the chip with another one I found, I can hear a quiet sound from the output. It's fading out slowly.
