Hey guys - I think I screwed up at my local surplus store...
They had 2N508's and NO other Ge trannies - I remembered that number from the GGG recommendation list so I got a few.  I just threw the circuit together this morning and get no output.  Maxing the gain and volume pot increases the hiss (woo-hoo) but no guitar tone comes out.  Looking back at the recommendations, I needed 2N508A's - oops.
So...are the 2N508's usable in this application or am I trying to push a rope?

Thanks in advance.

They should work fine. To the best of my knowledge that final letter means a very minor difference in some property of the transistor. The problem is most likely in your circuit.

Fuzz working w/2N508's - sounds pretty good.  (50-cents apiece was much more palatable than $6 apiece...+1 for my local surplus store!)

Lesson learned: Ge/metal can trannies can't be touching one another...

(I also had a cold joint - but the circuit didn't work until I pulled the cans apart...)

Thanks for the tranny response - I was ready to add it to the ill-researched pile...
