im trying to mount a b size box on very skinny coat hanger but the coat hanger prevents the screws from threading, how do you guys get around this problem?

When I do that, the supplied screws just barely thread, but I think at some point I found longer screws that worked, but maybe weren't exactly the right thread.

Get a hammer and start pounding the last 2 inches of the coat hamger flat enough to get the screws going...
Then when you have troubles down the road you can bang on the box to get out your frustration...!

Try soup cans for a quick way to mount for painting - no screws, just pinch and insert.

I use Campbell soup cans to hold the Hammond boxes. The standard sized "tomatoe soup" can holds a 1590B perfectly. Just cut off the top with a can opener, pinch the sides in and insert it into the Hammond box. The spring tension from the can holds it on tightly and the bottom of the can gives you a place to hold it while painting. After spraying I set it down and the box dries flat under a 100W buld.

The larger sized "Pregreso" soup can holds a 1590BB.

I was thinking I could screw several soup cans down to ply-wood and hang the ply wood for vertical spraying. Or piano-hing it for vertical spraying and flat drying.

It's time to buy a gun. That's what I've been thinking.

I have some solid core copper wire (?gauge) that I wrap a couple of times around the screw.  It isn't thick enough to keep the screw from tightening.  Then I can dangle the box from something else to spray.

I know, the soup can thing sounds kinda strange, so here's a pic.
It would be so easy to screw four cans to a 2x4.

And heres a movie I made with Win XP Movie Maker. (45k)

wow thanks guys these hints have been helpful. what i did before with any box i guess this would work lol i left the lid separate, i took 4 matches and cut the heads off, stuck them in the screw holes, turned the box upside down and it now has 4 legs and i took some tooth floss and loosely knotted it throught the input/output holes for easy hanging for vertical spraying and as for the lid i tied the floss again to it and just propped it slanted on the ground with 2 matches slanted at 45 degress through the screw holes, i dunno if this would help anyone, kind hard to paint vertically with this setup.

The easiest way is to go to your local hardware store and get 4 screws that are longer than the stock ones you use for the box, and have the same threading. The style head doesn't make any difference since you will only be using the screws for painting.

Typical screws used in enclosures:

* Hammond 1590B or 1590BB: Flat head 6-32 x 1/2" nickel plated phillips. For painting, get same thread 6-32 but longer than 1/2"
* Taiwan 125B: M3x8 Pitch 0.5 metric Flat head phillips. I've used M3x12 pan heads just to hold the box, and keep these for subsequent paintings.
