My Latest Build (Another Interface)

I love my drill press.

Guitar In, Tuner Out, 7 pin XLR carrying MIDI and two separate 9vac signals (for CAE floor controller and CAE pedal power supply), 6 blue water clear T1 LEDs because they're pretty, two mystery knobs (not my secret to give out), and outputs to three different amps.

The overall wiring minus the mystery pot circuit and the led perfboard strip:

I only used the shielded cables around the MIDI/9VAC feed and the wire from the guitar input jack to the rear guitar jack.  The interface enclosure is grounded to the rear guitar jack only - all other jacks are isolated.  If I had used any other jack for ground the client would have had noise if that jack weren't in use (guitar unplugged, one amp hooked up to an iso, etc).  Plus this way the client can isolate the sends to his amps without the interface un-isolating them.  Anyway, for the amp feedthroughs and the tuner feedthrough, I just used Belden 22AWG with teflon insulation and kept good distance between the signals.  You can also see where I improved the shielding of the enclosure by tying the sides to the front, back, and bottom of the enclosure:

Here you can see the shielded MIDI/9vac cable and the shielded guitar feedthrough (used a George L for this), and the unshielded tuner feedthrough (though it's kept away from anything else on its path to the rear jack).  The yellow and black wires over the shielded MIDI cable are the second pair of 9vac wires, which have the shielded MIDI/9vac cable and about 2 inches between them and the unshielded tuner feedthrough, so noise won't be a problem:

This photo came out lousy, but you can see the other ground lugs improving the enclosure's shielding, and the two 9vac jacks, one of which is tied into the 5 pin DIN (MIDI) jack on the rear.  The client is currently getting phantom for his CAE foot controller over the MIDI cable from his CAE 4x4, but with this second jack, if he needs to supply phantom without using the 4x4 he can plug a supply in here.  Note that it would be bad if he used both.  I'll have labels on those jacks and will specifically warn the client about this.

I ordered the wrong LEDs - the right ones should be here today.

The pots are reserved for a function he wants to add in the future.  I went ahead and drilled out the panel and put in the pots so I wouldn't have to disasemble everything later.

Thanks.  www.lansing-enclosures.com, about $70 for the 6" depth 1RU.
