Good to see you, Jimi.  Nice vid.  Impressed that you've learned to play geetar backwards like the astronaut fella...   :icon_wink:

sounds great! is it a HP using a optocoupler in some way?
i tried experimenting with that but never got the darn thing to distort on its own, the optocoupler i have don't seem to have much gain, maybe even less than unity?!

cheers
friendly reminder: all holes are positive and have negative weight, despite not being there.

nope.

i forgot all about that  ;)

its just this, with the original style transistors from the first iteration.

only deviantses <g> are the wires to the perc pot are reversed from the layout so it gets ballsyer as ya turn it up

1n60 subbed with a schottke bat 41

q1 russian mn256 (at least thats what it kinda looks like on the package... figure a ge 404 style pnp with a low gain, this one was around 45 hFE.

q2 bc547 hFE around 430. the pinout is opposite of how it looks in the orientation of the tagboard layout... the pinout is the same, but the q gotta be flipped 180 degrees so e is on the bottom

two 100k pots, one 500k pot, one 50k pot... all linear

i DID add reverse polarity protection with a 4001

i DID add a filter cap (100uF) and rfi snubber (2.2nF) cuz i had done a different layout, but screwed it up slightly... it was 15 holes wide by 10 rows high.  added a jumper from the cold side of the 47r input resistor to the bottom row so i had a row to add ps filters, and the polarity protection. just soldered the wires to the bottom of the boards instead of thru the holes like i usually do.

important is to use a shielded cable for the run from the footswitch to the input of the harmonix pot. keeps the noise down some.

but really, for all intents, same as the original from way back when. someone asked for one of them after buying one of my photone machines recently (my take on the foxx tone machine) so i just built one up using the tagboard fx layout eventually. fired right up.

sounded a bit more impressive to me than it did years ago. real good for one handed wanking. lotta tones possible. makes me miss using pedals live almost. i will probably build one for myself, too.

the schottke instead of the ge (which i suspect was a 1n60 schottke in the first place, not GE, but i wasn't hip enough to know the diff back then) makes a diff in it... get a much more singy sustain.

there's a lot of variations this circuit will run on. its VERY weird. i remember when i built it years ago, at one point you could pull a q and it would still work, making me suspect the 47uF cap is crucial to making it percolate..

but anyways, glad you guys approve. nice sounding little box.

but damn, that hippy dude is getting old. scary lookin mother@#$%er!!!! ;)

thanks for the kind words ;)

nope, no optocoupler bro. just a relatively bone-stock perc. the magic comes from @#$%in with the biasing of the two q's mostly. this is just above unity gain a bit. if ya need more volume, use a hotter q2.

astronaut fella? backwards? ya mean rob?

i don't need ANY effects to do that. i play like that live often just to freak the @#$% out of people who say it can't be done. its all in the phrasing, really. been doing it for years.

i haven't used any effects other than those i can get from my fingers, live, now in literally years, unless i need a talkbox... then i'll break out the old pedalboard.... in which case i just turn the gain on my marshall slightly, and use one of my statesboro bluesman fuzzes for dirt.

i like "air sculpture"... if i need an echo, i play something twice. if i need chorusing or flanging, i do it with vibrato and let the sound "mix" in the room. more dirt? play harder. i DO love effects, but nobody actually really NEEDS them for most stuff. figure out how to do it without them, and then when you DO use 'em, you can exploit them better sometimes.

anywho... onwards n upwards

oh yeah, for posterity, the original schematic, which is right. my original veros got some mistakes in values n stuff, but this is spot on.

Rob's a proper southpaw with lefty guitar. I'm lefty too, but I learned a right-hand guitar hung upsidedown and am stuck with it.
I can't play backwards though.

oh, THAT kinda backwards...lol... i was like, whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa????????????

that's just the camera being @#$%ed up. didn't even notice it til just now! lol

Photonic Juergulator on the test board.
All running on 2nd test - once I actually checked the pinouts. (BC640 pnp, bc547 npn)

I knew Jimis' vids were mirrored as any writing seen was, but I assumed you work in front of a mirror with the camera pointing over your shoulder. That way you don't need to work to the stupid little LCD on the cam that becomes invisible in decent light.

Do you know what you're doing?

Pedal completed. I might go looking for some different transistor combinations sometime.
Can't wait to try it out at our next rehearsal!
