bandpass filter for mic signal?

I want to get that telephone signal effect (often achieved by using a megaphon into the mic) in a stompbox format. I was wondering, how to treat a balanced signal? Apply the effect to both signals?

And of course, if anyone has a link to a schematic of a project of this nature, I'll appreciate it.

I used to do this with my old Furman parametric for a telephone sound - just highpass at about 300 Hz and lowpass at about 3 KHz, both with a fairly steep cutoff. Adding some clipping and maybe a little white noise might make it more realistic, but just the limited bandwidth was strikingly convincing.

The balancing thing is only part of the input and output.  What goes on in the middle of the circuit is always unbalanced, so just stick in the appropriate filter in there.  I do believe there is one posted over at geofex.
