I have read about every post reguarding this build but cannot find an aswer to my problem. I hope someone else can steer me in the right direction.

My Bsiab II is not distorting.. the volume, tone and even the gain pots seems to work . But I am not getting distortion.  I built the vero layout by Torchy. I would post a link to it but it does not seem to work.

I have used all J201's except in Q 2 where i used a NTE 451( Mpf102 ). I tried swapping the NTE in to different sockets with out any change in sound

My electrolytics are both in correctly, my soldering is fairly clean and I have inspected for any accidental connections with a magnifying glass.

1)  I did use a 1n4148 instead of the called for 1n914 Is this my problem?
Please help!

Arent 1N4148s the same as 1N914s?

burnt fingers

q2 and q4 look funky.  I'd double check all the connections there.
