i know this is OT.  but, here's why i posted it here: a, you guys aren't stupid, and b, it could be used on things more on topic.


here: i'm going to install a momentary pushbutton switch on my guitar that cuts the signal when it is pushed.  here's my question: should i use a switch that's normally closed that just disconnects the signal when pushed?  or should i use a normally open switch that shorts the signal to ground when pushed?

which would work best?  also, what kind of resistor placement/value could help prevent popping?

I'd vote for the second one since the cutting the signal will propably result in a bunch of hum. Connecting the signal to ground will basically be like the volume control at '0'.

  My 'Franken-Tele' I whipped up using a BC Rich neck..
has a switch I borrowed from a Monitors PCBoard..it used to be a 'contrast up' or something like "Brightness down...pushbutton type, makes a connection when the sprung button is pushed down, open connection when pressure is released...
  a little hole from the control pot routing to the top of the guitar [next to knobs] allows the switch button to be about flush with the face of the guitar body top, a simple wiring to output hot and ground from the switch lugs which I mounted in perf, and screwed to the control cavity...
  Press the button for signal STOP, I like being able to do the unmistakably apparent 'Slo-Wayy-Down' at the end of songs, 'increasing radius orbit' stuff...lol...effective.
  It might pop on ya...I now sometimes just get a little..to teensy..click, easily masked when Fuzz is on, I think maybe I tried a 1meg across the switch...hmmm...

so i'll probably try switching the signal to ground.  then maybe a 1 meg resistor inbetween the switch's lugs.
