I have an old MXR Phase 45 that I don't want to put through the abuse of gigging, but I can't live without it's amazing sound. So I wanna have a go at torchy's stripboard layout with the univibe mods so I can put this baby into retirement (it's a 75 if I'm reading the pot codes correctly). Has anyone completed a build of this layout? If so I'd love to see some pics and/or soundclips and any info on subs for the jfets.
Thought someone might be interested of seeing a few shots of this beast so check it out  ;)

Dude, that thing is ancient!
Phase 45 is one of my favourite effects, got some sound samples of mine at www.tothemax.web1000.com.
You put high gain distortion into that thing and you get some AWESOME sounds. Sounds much better IRL than in the clips, and the clips sound pretty good (well I think so!).

Yeah I bought this and a Phase 90 for $70 in '89. They couldn't give mxr pedals away at the time in aus! Wish I'd bought more. The phase 90 was a block logo without the led or power plug. Don't know how old it was but was stolen a couple of years ago.
I gotta have a phase 45 on my board. That's why I need a clone. I would cry if something happened to my orig.
Great sound clips. Really sounds very univibey. Was that built from Torchy's layout?
I always run mine before high gain effects. Sounds great with a cranked valve amp driven by fuzz. Can ALMOST get that Machine Gun thing happening.
Thanks for the reply!

Nope, its just a standard one from tonepad.com

That is nice!
Sad thing is, I remember when those were NEW.  :icon_sad:

My compliments for this piece of guitar history!

I've realized a Phase45 clone with UniVibe mods, but I've used a pcb (tonepad version). This can help you to clone the effect i a standard 1590 box.
You can experiment a sligth different sound with metalized caps instead ceramic: I like more thi version! It seems warmer than ceramics.

As a matter of fact, I myself built the Phase 45 from tonepad and must say IMHO it's the best phaser build out there!
It just provides a nice phase and sounds real good  :)

I thought about building one due to its small size and simplicity except I don't want to mess with matching even 2 transistors. Ill go the harder and more expensive route of the phase 100. Although I haven't seen too many great review, but not too many bad ones either. The phase 100 might even be overkill as I like a subtle slower phasing.

Serious! Using the GEOFEX matcher it takes me about a minute to find 2 jfets that match. You should make one.

mdc

Absolutely! If you like a subtle phaser then you'll love it! I use mine for that "cold shot" sound with the speed up high and a strat with the neck and middle pickup. Also does a pretty good univibe when you run it into a fuzz or distortion box. I always thought the phase 90 was too over the top for most things, and mine didn't get much use. But my phase 45 I sometimes find hard to turn it off! (and it has nothing to do with the 30+ year old footswitch either  :D)

You can make the Phase 90 and put a toggle switch to switch between the stages (I saw that mod somewhere) and make it Phase 45 - Phase 90... Thats very interesting.... you can use 2 footswitches if you like... I'll search the page for that mod (correct me if I'm wrong)
