how to make my OD/Distortion/EQ pedal work on return port?

i want to bypass any amp's preamp and use my OD/Distortion/EQ pedal directly to the power amp.. so i can get consistant ( i hope) sound on whatever amp i use..

the problem is, i tried with my DS-1 but it sound wierd.. can u help me what to do?

Plug everything into the Return of the fx loop, bypass the front-end totally.  Dont think it'd be to good though?

yeah i've done that before.. but the volume is too low and muffled tone..
