Hi guys, I'm getting back into pedal building and would like to build myself a distortion pedal suitable for playing along to Rammstein etc.

Ideally the following would apply

Op-amp based   ( I have loads and very few transistors )
Veroboard layout available. I can design my own, but a verified layout is always a plus
Simple circuit. I don't want 400 discete components on my board.
Loads of gain, harsh, responds well to palm mutes.  Again see Rammstein

Thanks again!

P.S, Aron I built the booster as a warm up project to get back into the swing of things. It works great and I hope to post pictures tomorrow.

Dr Boogey seems to be the heaviest pedal mentioned around here, there was a vero layout posted very recently too  :)

Thanks, but that's a J-FET pedal and my local store has none in stock. I'm looking for something to build this weekend. I might just wing together and Op-AMP diode clipper with lots of resistance across the fedback and drop a simple tonestack on the output if there's no better suggesions.

Even if its not for this weekend order the parts to build Dr. Boogey, you'll thank yourself for doing it. I'm (obviously) a metal player and my brother is too (both Rammstein fans as well!) i've had my Dr. Boogey put together for 2 days and my bro is already asking me to build him one.  ;D

You could try this my Headcase ... It has about as much distortion as a RAT pedal, it's opamp based and low component count ... and it sounds good too  :icon_mrgreen:

It's here (vero):

OK Guys I'm convinced. I'll order up the parts for the Dr Boogey :)

Thanks Melanhead too, I'll breadboard your circuit tonight and see how it sounds.

cool, I still wanna build a Dr Boogey, but alas I haven't had the time  :icon_wink:

So anyone have the link to the Vero for the Dr. Boogey? You have all talked so much good about it I'm getting very interested.  :icon_wink:

Over the top distortion?

Vulcan

oops, you dont want transistors

DIST+ W/Booster or compressor or EQ or other Booster in front of it...
If "Du Haste" to bias Jfets...
A Simple 'laced' DIST+ Circuit like that can do heavy duty tricks...options options options.
OD250 is about the same thing..
Convention creates following, following creates convention.

Hi
If you have 2 NPN transistors, you can make a fuzzrite.  It's very metal, very random.
If you don't mind some fuzzy filth with your distortion, maybe an MFZ-1 ?
it's a dual op-amp and a handfuls of other parts.  Black Keys albums are 100% MFZ-1.
cheers

Build a Dual Dist+ and put the tonestack inbetween.  Also, check out the Chaos or RoseyRay.   :icon_cool:

the RAT circuit from tonepad gives you HUGE low end, and a somewhat abrasive sound at max gains.. it should match that Rammstein sound pretty well

oldrocker

The Rat is a nice sounding distortion but doesn't respond well to palm muting IMHO.

ahh i see, the good ol' "chug-chug" thing... does it has something to do with low mids emphasis?

i would suggest a boss metal zone mt-2, its probably not one you would want to build as there are a load of bits but a great pedal for metal.

i suggest a high gain distortion with some careful equalization. something with sweepable mids, (select a frequency and then boost or cut)
you want to boost the bass and high frequencies and cut the mids.

anyone heard the metal muff from electro harmonix? maybe theres a schematic out there for that (its newish so i doubt it)!
