Transormer & parts in Super Clean power supply

I'm sure you're all familiar with the GGG super clean power supply.. The 'build of materials' text lists

1 - 120/25 volt transformer and
1 - LM317 Transistors
1 - Heat sink for the LM317


I dont really understand these three... For the transformer would any of these work

Transistor?
and the heatsink...?



Sorry but I've searched and read up about these things but still can't figure out what to buy   ???

The LM317 isnt a transistor.  Its an IC Chip.  You want to use a heat sink for most parts when soldering so you dont overheat them.  All it is, is a metal clip so soldering iron heat goes to it and not the part.  You can use a alligator clip, possibly paper clip, any metal clip.

Yeah.. I thought so but GGG lists the LM317 under 'Transistor' so I got confused.
How do I tell a 120/25 V transformer...
And where to clip the clips..?

Well not quite sure about transformer.

I just realized, there are special heat sinks used perminantly on circuits that a part may heat up a lot.  Power supplies are one of them.  These are used in the sort of way that a computer fan is used.  It keeps the components cool and safe.  You still want to use heat sinks when soldering though.  Just clip the clip to the lead going through on top between body of the component and the end of the lead.

I don't think those transformers in your link are what you want.  you need a 25 VA transformer.  The ones in your link had a max current of 200mA.  At 12 volts it has a VA rating of 2.4 VA.

The LM317 will be fine.  Depending on how many pedals you are planning to run off the supply and how much current each pedal draws will determine if you need a heat sink.  You will need to check the data sheet for the 317, but I think it is rated at 1 amp.  You could just bolt the 317 to the metal chassis and use it as a heat sink, just remember that it needs to be electrically insulated from the metal case, and needs to be thermally conductive to the case.

hemostats also work good for disappating heat during soldering. If you cant get the cool ones from a medical supply, they also make specialized ones for fishing that work nicely, and when you're not bass fishing... might as well use them  :icon_lol:

I think I'll use the parts from here as the projects and schematics look similar.
