what's the principal behind an acoustic simulator? simple...

hey. i'm just curious how an acoustic simulator works? is it just a lot of EQ'ing? does it actually give a bit of twang to the bass somehow by clipping it or something?

should be a simple question, i'm just hoping for a simple answer.

That's all they do.  Some specific EQ'ing  which are guided by physical processes (resonances etc) that occur on a real acoustic guitar.

I have found that with my Marshall BluesBreaker and my 4uzz, I put the settings like this for a GREAT acoustic simulator sound:
BluesBreaker:
Volume- 10
Tone- preference
Gain- 8
4uzz:
Gain- 9
Volume- 10
Position- 1
Guitar:
Volume- 4
Tone- 10
Pickups- Coil Tapped (Single Coil)

I can get some soundclips up if you would like

cool. i pulled apart my crappy am100. it had a lot of crap that made it look like more than EQ, but i noticed that that's al lthe control on it seem to do!

thats interesting call1800ksmyazz. i don't want you to go out of your way with recordings, but it certainly answered my question. i was thinking, if eq'ing is the only case, there might be amps out there that are half way to having an acoustic sound that may catch the ear of some people.

i'd love an ac2. i find the neck pickup works best with my am100. after i've been using it it seems crappy to go back to my normal 'electric guitar' tone. even though i know it still sounds good.

and yeah, it does prettymuch look mainly like filters, I'm still trying to figure out the rest but so far it kind of seems like the 4052 and 4066 handly mainly the switching between the different modes of operation

oh my god! that schematic makes me want to cry. it looks very boss-like in complexity. thanks. i saved the image to my computer for future reference. i'd hate to try to make a pcb for that though, the chances are just too good that i'd stuff something up and find it debugging.

I have a Boss AC-2.  It's a great pedal.  There's been a bit of an argument over how close to an acoustic guitar sound an effects pedal can get.  I think it works as well as to be expected.  It's not earth shattering but it's cheaper than buying a condenser mic, mic pre-amp and of course an acoustic guitar.  Not including setting it all up to record.
Not that I need to build one,  but like you I thought maybe I could.  When I saw the schematic of an actual AC-2 you could've knocked me over with a feather.  There ain't no way.  But that layout posted here might be possible.

exactly the way i felt! haha. i saw the schematic and thought "maybe once i'm retired" but with the pcb layout it looks very possible

Personally I find that Neck + middle on strat, through a clean amp, maybe a bit of Bluesbreaker, gives me a very nice tone. Sure, it isnt very acousticy, but is an odd mixture of acoustic with a hint of electric.

well yeah. it wouldn't have to sound exactly like an acoustic, but it could give you something better to use for your cleans. i was talking about using the neck pickup on my sg with humbuckers.

i wonder if rolling back the tone can give you nylon strings?

oh no! that looks crazy! i'd hope it would be a lot easier with a pcb etch though. componenets look sorta cheap so i should give it a go.

from the videos it mostly just sounds like a clean guitar. sounds nice though. i guess i'd have to be there to hear the acoustic part of it.
