I often use a stereo headphone at night to avoid disturbing others with my guitar. This is my setup -
strat, ts9 clean or other overdrive, yamaha gep50 19" rack for reverb and stereo ambiance then a stereo headphone amp.
I would like to add a preamp with tone controls or eq and maybe speaker sim before the gep50. Is there any advantage with this application, in building an all tube preamp, eg i was thinking of the preamp section from the super texan design similar to the fender ab763 ( I think) or would a simpler tone control/eq plus jfet j201 type booster or ss graphic eq be cheaper and just as an effective solution?
Any suggestions?

A tone control and a speaker sim will sound much better!

thanks for that tip I have found the alembic preamp. I'll build one channel of that and change the cathode caps to 25uf.
