I want to build an A/B selector to split my guitar signal through two separate pedal chains to different amps - a 30 W SS and a 5 W tube.

Will this simple Tonepad A/B selector layout work:  http://www.tonepad.com/getFile.asp?id=107  ?

Yeah, that'd work fine. I drew up one a while ago too: http://g0g0g0.dyndns.org/uploads/050114/ABbox.gif , some minor difference in the wiring but it does exactly the same thing as the tonepad one.

You would need to get into some slightly more fancy stuff if you want to be able to do A/B/Y

There's a great one at www.fulltone.com in the "tech tips & answers" page.
