Hi guys,
This just came into the shop for repairs. It was purchased new in South America.
It sounds to my ears like one of the superfuzz versions. It looks alot like a "ace tone fuzzmaster".. or one of the fuzz's from the killer uzzfay page!  http://members.fortunecity.com/uzzfay/home.html

enjoy!

From the top, the board looks like a lesser-populated Univox SuperFuzz.

Can you take a few good closeup pics of both sides of the board?

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

This is the kind of stuff I love.  Even if it is a design we've seen before, and even if it sounds like crap, I love to see a weird old fuzz I've never seen before.

Barcode80

it would be great of we could all work together on recreating and drawing up the circuit! i don't think i've seen this one before...

Dragonfly

reminds me somewhat of the ibanez standard fuzz....

Achtung!
Two germanium transistors!!!
May be an octave-up!

Rodgre

I have a the same pedal as a Mica Wailer. Mine is definitely of the SuperFuzz family with that sick tone scoop switch and the hint of octave up. Great pedal.

The board is etched "FP-1"

All of the electro's are 10uf-16volt.

The big orange mylar is .22uf

The small brown/red cap is .0015uf

4 of the tranny's are c828

One of them is marked 4D K30A

There are two germ diodes.

It does have a little bit of grinding octave like the superfuzz.
With the "tone change" cancelled,   it sounds a little l bit like my shin-ei  fy-2 companion clone .

It is a bruno/Ibanez fuzz machine. Check out this page: http://filters.muziq.be/model/bruno/fuzzmachine

 Yep,
AKAIK it's one of the many versions the same as the 5 tranny Ibanez Standard Fuzz.
They were made in Japan under a whole lot of different brands. "Ibanez" in the USA and Australia, however there seems to be so many differently branded versions.

Here's one as a "Bruno"

Here's a "Marlboro"

http://www.geocities.com/~stompnet/Main/Gallery/wailer.jpg
and here's an Ibanez..

Nice photos!

I traced the fuzz section of an Ibanez Standard Wau Fuzz:

http://users.rio.com/senorris/junk/iswf.gif

Someone told me it was the same circuit as the stand alone fuzz you have. A cool Super-Fuzz variation. Notice the simple tone mod switch.

Sir HC has a stand alone "Machine" and likes it a lot. High praise indeed!

Thanks again for the photos!

Edit: The 100K resistors parrallel with the pots are just to make the pots 50K.

At my site (the URL nightingale posted) you can see some more names (see "related" section):

Bruno Fuzz Machine
Ibanez 59 Standard Fuzz Machine
Mac-Tone MF-2 Fuzz Machine
Marlboro Wailer
Mica Fuzz Machine
Northland Fuzz Machine

And I have a picture of an Aria Diamond model as well (in my "to do" list ;)). It's interesting to hear that the circuit looks like the Superfuzz...

Great, thanks for posting this one up :D
REminds me also of the "Fender Blender" - but using tranny for octave rather than diodes !
Similar setup though ...

IIRC they are FET input versus the all bipolar Super Fuzz.  Grittier than the Superfuzz and a lot of fun.

Assuming the linked-to schematic (http://users.rio.com/senorris/junk/iswf.gif) is accurate, you will note that the tone switch does not select between a scooped sound and an unscooped volume-compensated tone as it does in the Superfuzz.  Rather, what is shown is an arrangement whereby the location of the scoop is changed to permit much more upper bass and lower mids to come through..

Hello Hello--
Hey Dan or Mark  [or anybody who has built one of these]!
What trannys did you use in the circuit as substitutes for the originals???    The hfe of the originals is low to low-medium  [125 - 200hfe].   How about a good substitute for the original fet??
Thanks!
Brian.

Sir H C

I would guess the ubiquitous 2N2222 would work well.  These are usually pretty low Hfe.

I haven't built one (have a real one).
