Highway 89 too loud

Hi Doug,

Built your Highway 89 a couple of weeks ago , I must say I like it very much so I would like to let you and all others who built how I use it .
The output is very high so I lowered the volumepot to 200K and I can turn it on only a little bit before it gets too loud. And it had too much highs for my taste so I use a Boss GE-7 after it with the freq from 1.6 k up to 6.4k turned down progressively: and I upped the 200 and 400 Hz a bit. This way I can get close to a fat Larry Carlton and Robben Ford tone.
Today I was testing my Peppermill once more and put the previous two fx before it and it gave an even fatter tone , I think because of even less high freq content.
Is there a better remedy to tame the volume a bit  ??

Another case of Wrong Taper here. Are you sure you're using Audio (Logarithmic) taper for the vol control? I'm suspecting you have a linear pot in there.

The pot value is quite irrelevant to how the taper works. Changing it doesn't help. It's the taper.

I know what you mean Jim and I might have forgotten to check the taper.
Maybe I could add another tonestack because there is a massive amount of gain in my Highway.
I just added a low pass filter at 4100Hz ( 820 ohm R and 47 n ), sounds better to me .
Must experiment more

It does have an idiotic amount of gain, though.   :icon_biggrin:

Few instrument-items have made me happier.

Gonna change the resistor for a 2k pot and a 22n cap to get a tweakable filter.
Leaves still plenty of gain .
