I have one of these and information that I have pulled off the web says that they hiss a lot and have a hum in them.   All I know is that, when I use it on my board, it has a background noise that seems kind of "digital" in nature.  Some of the comments suggest that this thing is ultra sensitive to power supply.... that it WILL hum if you use batteries.... and, if you feed it a power supply it had better be an individual one feeding JUST the delay.

I find myself wondering if a previous owner got in there and jacked with any of the adjustment pots like a clock or something.

Anyway, I am just putting this on here to see if anyone has any experience with this thing or any thoughts on it at all.  I'm going to come up with a supply here exclusively for it and will make sure it is well regulated and filtered so maybe that will help.

Any thoughts?

I have most of the Line 6 Tone Core pedals, and they also display power-supply related noise under some circumstances.  provide them with their own power supply, or share an all-analog PSU (i.e., no switching allowed), and they behave admirably.  My understanding is that this is typical of many digital FX pedals.

The 301dl, if one believes posted comments, is noisy in its own right despite having many things to comend it.  One thing you may want to consider is a dedicated compander or other double-ended (encode/decode, pre-emphasis/de-emphasis) noise reduction system to make it more tolerable.  Just note that not all circuits respond favourably to such things, but it is worth a try.
