Any use for these?

Well as some may know I have recently been taking apart a few misc. electronics that arent needed anymore just to play around with.  I opened up a Nintendo Zelda game today from around 1988.  It didnt work because it needed a battery change, but it had a special screw to get into, and the battery was soldered in.  Nintendo didnt want anyone changing the battery in this thing.  So my dad drilled it open for me.  Now I have the circuit board of it with the chips in it.  Any use for these chips?  Use as memory chips?  I know that the bottom right chip (one of the smaller ones) is the chip where the game would save to.

So any use for these?

Harry

The battery doesn't slide out?

KerryF

Nope.  Tried everything.  Its soldered in  :P

Harry

Shame that's a classic. I guess you desolder and find a replacement if you wan't to play it again. Otherwise I don't know anything about those chips. Thinking of making a Zelda Fuzz?

Yea, I dont really want to keep it, because if I do, that means my dad goes back to playing that all day like he said he used to, and my mom doesnt want that.  But maybe a Zelda fuzz would be cool.  But it would be like a 1-of-a-kind pedal unless someone else opened up one and used the parts, because they arent available online.  :)

But anyway, how would I even know what to do with one of them!?  Anyone find a datasheet?

Harry

Hehe that's funny, How old's your dad?

Barcode80

google the part numbers. i would almost bet money on you turning up a datasheet.

KerryF

My dad is 44.  He plays PSP everyday. haha.  I never play videogames, but he plays them.  Strange.

I googled them, but nothing much.

MikeH

I googled the part no LH5164D3-L on one of the chips and was able to get to here... but I hope you're pretty good at reading Japanese

Heh, fun bit of detective work here...

The Sharp chip on the bottom left and the Fujitsu (F) chip on the top right are SRAM, like only 8kb or 64kb.

The chip labelled Nintendo and 6613A is a NES lockout chip that you can learn about HERE

The Nintendo MMC1A is a "Multi-Memory Controller"

The chip marked "NES-ZEL-1 PRG" is the ROM containing the executable code (Nintendo Entertainment Sysetm, ZELda, version 1)

Unfortunately, I don't think any of that is of much use in building stompboxes. Maybe the SRAM for a (short) delay line, but not without a lot of other components.

Thanks tommy.  I guess theres not much use, but the board looks pretty cool so i can probably just keep it together.

Harry

You could use those diodes if you really wan't to make a fuzzelda box.

Barcode80

you could likely fit the components for the atari punk console in the zelda case tho. that would be cool...

Or if you really wanted to get carried away: Gut a nintendo system, add in a pre-amp and power supply, rig something up so your guitar plugs into the controller input, gut Nintendo cartridges and replace with effects using pins as the bypass/power, have outputs going to the tv's audio output (using the same cable). How's that for a completely ridiculus idea?

Ge_Whiz

Desolder / cut out the battery, replace it, sell game on ebay. Buy useful components.  :icon_rolleyes:

Some time ago I had an idea like that, a cartrige-based pedalboard... Could work perfectlly!!!... I'll be interesting to build the power amp into the nintendo and make the preamp or different EQ's into the cartriges...for experiment a little!!...

Yeah.. I know... I'm nuts :icon_redface:
