I couldn't tell You if it's true bypass or not but I do use one all the time and find that if You keep it to around 12 oclock on a clean amp setup it should work fine however if You have a 2 channel amp and use a slightly dirty sounding channel it will certainly boost the signal resulting in a fairly decent sounding overdrive even with a single coil guitar like a Strat. If You set it full bore on a slightly dirty sounding channel it will give a fairly heavy drive sound but at the price it's as good as anything else I've tried. I leave on all the time
