I've found them for between $6 and infinity in the Newark catalog, but I wondered if there was another source for a high quality poly cap as large as 10uf for a mic pre output.

10F poly?

I'd get ten AVX 1uF caps, Mouser stock 581-BN154E0105K, 0.32 each for $3.20 total. Probably easier to package, too.

They're 17.7mm long, 10.6mm high, and 5.2mm wide, 0.7" x 0.42" x 0.2".

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

6.8uf x 100V poly caps are the larger I have. 1.2 x 1.2 x 0.8 cm.

the smallest 10uF (100V) I have are Matsushita polypropylenes I bought surplus which measure about 23x18x9mm (LxWxT). They were cheap because they were surplus (around 90 cents?), so probably more expensive otherwise. I have a couple of polyester 10uF 100V also (Matsushita = Panasonic), but these take up a lot more space, about 31x25x13mm.  The polypropylenes I tried for the balanced inputs in a Portastudio (on one channel), and it sort of seemed like the freq. extension in the lows made a cheap mic sound a lot more sensitive but I think it was causing distortion on peaks (crackling), so I backed off to about 4uF(3.9uF polyprop.), and it seemed okay but not as sensitive.
