This is pretty simple.
http://www.fataltourist.com/articles.asp?id=4 I've got a pdf somewhere of a better optical theremin but I can't remember where I downloaded it from, I'll have a look for it.

Here's a link to the pdf I was on about earlier.
www-personal.engin.umich.edu/~jglettle/class/phys489/Theremaniac.pdf lots of cool theremin stuff in it including another 555 version.

you can do the Atari Punk Console with LDR's. Its Nuts! (and a workout)  My breadboarded one has an LDR switchable to a pot for each of the controls... hope to build it with a modified enclosure.
Breadboards are as invaluable as underwear - and also need changed... -R.G.

in the atari punk console, where would you place the ldr's?

thats up to you... I'm working on a way to flush mount them... but a plastic enclosure helps out with the shorting issue

I think he means where in the circuit. The short answer is that you can replace any pot that's wired as a variable resistor (two terminals, as opposed to a voltage divider, which uses all three terminals) with an LDR. Depending on your LDRs and your personal taste, I imagine that you might want to put a fixed resistor in parallel with the LDR to get the range of resistance you need.

sorry,i should have been more specific... where in the circuit do you place them? do you just replace the pots with an ldr and resistor?

edit: sorry i didn't see the last post

I find that I get a little bit more control using 1 pot and 1 ldr at a time... having them all switchable made for the most sound options... ldr1/ldr2,  pot1/ldr2, ldr1/pot2, pot1/pot 2
