Perf layout for Maestro FSH?

I'm in the process of gathering parts for a filter sample and hold effect on perf.  Does anyone know of any perf layouts for this?  I would doubt it but I thought I'd better check. There was a couple of times I perfed up some circuits laying them out the hard way only to find layouts for later.  Also has anyone had any problems with this effect after building it?  I did a search but did't run across to many build reports.
Also I can only find a CA3080A and CA3080E and not the one with the "T" suffix.  Will any of these work?  If so is one better than the other?

I love the FSH circuit.  I assume that you're looking to build the original, GGG, version that uses the 3080 chips.  However, I would like to recommend the Tonepad version (it appears to have been updated in the last few days now that I look at it).  The Tonepad version has some major advantages, first, it uses LM13600 OTA chips rather than the increasingly hard to find 3080 chips.  Secondly, it incorporates a great number of mods in the layout that are not as easy to incorporate in the GGG version.  Thirdly, my Tonepad version sounds clearer and is less noisy than the GGG version I built.

As far as perfbuilding, I would seriously advise against it with this circuit.  It can be extremely noisy as you will find if you search the archives.  Do yourself a favor and etch or buy a board for this build, no matter which version you go with.

Thanks for the heads up on the Tonepad version.  I didn't realize it was there until you pointed it out.  Yes this looks like a difficult build on perf.  I was thinking of etching something so maybe this will be the one.  My last 3 perf projects not counting the MR.EQ I did resently are the Zombie Chorus, Ultraflanger and the Rebote 2.5 Delay. Before that was the Easyvibe and the Phase 45 w/univibe mods.
I need to pick up some P'n'P and find out if my local library has a good laser printer.  Tonepad is out of stock on thier pre-made PCB's for this project.  I think I would rather etch my own anyway since ready made PCB's feels like I'm painting by numbers.   At least etching my own will require some new skills.

I know what you mean about buying pre-drilled boards.  I used to love perf building until I started building effects like the FSH, Maestro Ring Modulator, and Neovibe.  I find that I take up a lot more room when building with perf board.  I never would have gotten those projects in a box if I didn't etch boards for them!

Good luck and let me know how it turns out.

Hey Ry,  I'll keep you informed on how it goes.  I have a question that I may start a new topic on.  Where can I get a 2M lin. pot.?  I found a 1M rev. log although it's $4.00 but the 2M I can't find anywhere.  I tried Small Bear, Futurlec, Mouser and Newark but none seem to carry it.

Ry

Small bear has the larger (24mm) ones:

I have a 16mm 2M pot, but I don't recall where I bought it.

Thanks Ry,  I completed ordering most of what I need to put the FSH together.  I'm trying to track down some P'n'P iron on sheets to make my PCB.  Where do most people order the toner transfer sheets?

$uperpuma

I get mine from Pedal Parts Plus or Small Bear... $2 a sheet at either place.
Breadboards are as invaluable as underwear - and also need changed... -R.G.

Thanks $uperpuma,  I ordered some sheets from Pedal Parts Plus.  This being my first attempt at etching using an iron and PnP I bought some extra sheets incase something doesn't work right the first time.

$uperpuma

you should be able to get several boards per sheet..I try to leave as little scrap material as possible, as I do with my copperclad...

Hey Oldrocker

I'm about to start a Maestro F/SH build. I was planning to do the simpler one, I got a board from GGG. However, seeing that Tonepad have updated their entry and in a reply to an email enquiry Francisco tells me they hope to have boards ready for January, maybe I'll do the more complex one.

I could maybe print a board. Part of me is really intrigued and then another part of me is; more equipment, more time, more learning ... there's only so many hours in the day. Plus I just bought a couple of Tonepad boards (Tonebender and Blue Box) and they're really nice quality. They don't look hand etched to me. Or here's a thought, if you print a board and it goes well and you fancy printing a second one, I'd be happy to cover the cost of both? ... well just a thought like I say.

Or even .. hey Francisco, any chance of those boards any sooner?

Either way, we should keep in touch on the build.

I was thinking sliders rather than pots would be pretty cool on this, very old school synthesiser!

Hey hedroom,
Let me know how your tonebender and blue box projects go I wouldn't mind building those.  I'm more of a do it the hard way kind of person so perf boarding and etching my own PCB is right up my alley.  Well I would be glad to etch you a FSH PCB but you might want me to wait since I've never done one yet.  Once I know I can be successful at the process I'll be doing a lot more etching boards in the future.  If it works out I'll make two.  It's the drilling of all those darned holes that have me worried.  But I think I'll do alright.  Tonepad give pretty good directions for etching boards so I think I'll be okay.  I let you know how it goes.  Right now I'm just ordering and waiting on parts.  None of the orders are fast shipping so it's goint to take a while.

If I was hell bent on perf I would...

tape the printed PCB layout of my choice onto perf board and follow that.
The holes line up exactly in some places and just a little bit off in others.

Looking at the GGG layout... its big and spacious so that would be my choice (if I was hell bent on perf).

It's time to buy a gun. That's what I've been thinking.
Maybe I can afford one, if I do a little less drinking. - Fred Eaglesmith
