MXR Noise Gate perf layout (kind of messy but still........)

let me know what you think. I think there's too many dirt boxes already :icon_mrgreen:. This should be a good complement.

As always, unverified, please let me know if you see many mistakes...

In the parts list there's no value for C2.  Should C8 be a non-polar 1uF?

Xavier

Ouch, I'll correct that. Yes the 1uF cap is non polaryzed

Thanks !!

oldrocker

No problem.  I forgot to mention the I like the layout so far.  I wish I had it when I built mine.  I used the 2 single op amp 741 chips also in mine which works great.  So I may try building another one using this layout when you're done.  The only difference is I used 3904's for the transistors.

Xavier

mmm.....i thought about it while drawing it. Maybe I could do another one using a dual opamp like the TL072. Should be smaller but drawing layouts that include opamps is a pain in the ass ......

IMPORTANT: NOW I have found by using the search function (dumbass dumbass dumbass) that the schematic has some errors, not many, but the Zener is a 2N5231 ,essentially a 5,1V Zener. The FET is inverted also....and definitely there's a known author for the schematic, so tomorrow I'll make the necessary corrections.

oldrocker

I used a TL072 when I first built mine and I couldn't get it to work for some unknown reason.  I switched to using the 741's and it worked.  Go to the Schematic section of this forum and find the Noise gate schem that Aron did.  That one looks pretty good.

Xavier

I have made the necessary corrections according to the several threads about this schematic

Nice layout for PCB too!... you can avoid some bridges by placing some components a little bit different, and giving resistors a little more space. Q1 and Q2 are for electronic switching?

Guys,  I already built the MXR noisegate at Tonepad everything is fine. The only problem is when your last note start to fade out the hum and hiss is coming out before noisegate shut it off. You will notice this specially when doing lead sustaining the last note before it fade. I don't know if Boss NS2 is good co'z I have read several ownner who bought and share their experience. I when to Yupangco here in the Philippines they are the exclusive distributor of Roland and Boss and I ordered one which cost 90 US equivalent in pesos. i'll share the experience when I got the order this month. I only wasted my time and money on the Mxr project

If you see how my first attempt at drawing this circuit was....... ;D

Honestly, I don't know what the transistors are for, but this circuit was branded like a "noise gate / line driver", so I understand it also acts as a buffer, hence the momentary switch, it's intended to be "on" all the time.

No noise gate is perfect.  If you have a severe amount of noise then a noise gate won't work as good.  If you're just experiencing a little hiss or a little oscillation sounds coming from lets say a phaser it will work fairly well.  Some think noise gates are supposed to create miracles even with an extreme amount of noise.  The truth is if your rig is too noisy already then you need to fix that first.  Use your noise gate for slight high gain hiss or feedback mute and it will work great.

Oldrocker thanks, What I'm using during testing is only my reissued TS9 with single coil Yamaha guitar! And I tried replacing or switching to different JFET and zener diode it's the same. You maybe right, no noisegate is perfect. But then I already ordered the BossNS2... anyway I'll give you feedback when I got the NS2. The store manager told me the item will arrived this month...

My perfect noisegate used to be a volume pedal at the end of the chain !!
I knew next to nothing then about bringing down noise levels.

Alf

That's STILL the best noise gate IMO  !!  :D

Alf,
Hi. have you try it in single coil pick up with only one pedal plus your MXR project? Try just a note and wait hear till the note fade out.... and give me result... Maybe my MXR project is diffective.  Thanks

rogeryu_ph

Alf,
As I promised, yesterday I got my Boss NS2  :D  BUT first I like to ask this thread if they want me to share this experience.... :icon_wink:

Hi rogeryu ,

I didn't  make an MXR noisegate. I just made a joke about the best noisegate being a volume pedal at the end of you fx chain !

But what have you been up to ?

rogeryu_ph

I thought you built the MXR noisegate. I didn't got the joke. Anyway, I'll just keep my experience on this noisegate things.

Keep on DIYrocking!!
