Hey,

I need a type of 12mm diameter "hollow thread" type thing with 2 bolts, so that I can connect two pieces of metal plate together, while allowing me to route wires through the centre of it. I tried taking an old switch apart to use the thread on one of those, but the plunger part is really hard to get out.

Anyone ever seen anything that will do the job and know where I can get it?

hardware stores or fleet farm, even menards have what's called "threaded pipe"

Go to the lamps and electrical section of any well stocked hardware store and look for "threaded nipples". They're commonly used to screw lamps together.

I was going to say lamp store too.

I worked in a lamp store and the repair bench is stocked with hollow threaded pipe.
I forget what the standard size is. 12mm is kinda small but you might find something.
It's time to buy a gun. That's what I've been thinking.
Maybe I can afford one, if I do a little less drinking. - Fred Eaglesmith

OK, thanks guys. I knew what I wanted, just not what it was called/where to start looking.

Cheers!

I havn't done this, but I suspect that if one wanted to cut off a piece of threaded pipe & put a couple of nuts on it, it would be better to put the nuts on BEFORE you cut it, so that if you get a badly burred end (and you will!) then winding the nuts off will clean up the thread & give you a chance of putting them back on afterward.

12mm is about a half an inch. A good bit bigger than what you'll find in the standard lamp fittings. Those are about 5/16 - 3/8. Maybe over in the electrical section, the fittings for conduit are larger than what you're looking for. The plumbing section of your hardware store may have some brass or copper fittings that will work.

One way or another, you're gonna be wandering around Home Depot.
