does anyone know where to get that rubbery pad stuff to hold a battery in place like zvex does?

mouser? smallbear? fridge magnet?

how thick is the stuff? 2-3mm? i might look for an alternative somewhere

Any craft store (Michaels etc etc) has the foam rubber sheets in many colors. Not exactly the same rubber but close enough.
Just use a little Contact cement and glue it down. The foam sheets are good for the bottom and other places in stompboxing as well.
