when it comes to simple buffers you cant beat a jfet, just a couple more passive involved.
i do here where your coming from though!
simple rules!

CRAP! i'm out of switches, son't have my test setup built yet, and i hate wiring effects direct to test them since i can't test against unaffected signal as easy. guess this one will sit there with the circuit built until i get some more switches.

can someone post some sound samples?

so i played around with this more today, i think a 1m pot would be best for the volume.
the 100k kills the low end.

As a newbie I am really enjoying this little circuit!  Doesn't get much simpler than this, and it sounds great. I've played around with the caps a bit and tried a few different diodes...so far the 4148's seem to be the best. My question is this- is there a diode that will provide more clipping (ie fuzzier tone)??? I will probably end up putting this in a little box with a stomp switch and no volume control.
Thanks!

Rather than increase the pot value you can increase the output cap. 15nF will give you around 100Hz -3dB. Otherwise you'll still lose bass if you're feeding something with a low input impedance.

if you want more fuzz put a 100 ohm resistor and a 47uf cap to ground from pin 1 on the 386.
