ok i just built a foxx tone machine according to http://www.generalguitargadgets.com/diagrams/ftmsc.gif and it sounds great! only problem is that when i turn the effect on, there is a half second where the fuzz sort of fades in.  my wires in the box are really short too...  anyone have any ideas?

Any time an effect fades in or out it's most likely that the DC bias conditions are being upset in the "out" condition.

At a guess, something about your setup causes a capacitor to run down when the effect is switched out and then releases it when you switch the effect in. It takes an audible time for the cap to charge back up to where the sound passes through again.

As to exactly what's wrong, can't say from the info you show. An input or output cap being electrolytic and reversed in polarity is a shot in the dark. Second choice is wrong bypass switching.

The definitive way to find this one is to do the measurements in "Debugging: What to do when it doesn't work" in both the effect in and effect out conditions and compare the voltages. They ought to be the same, but probably aren't. The first place they aren't the same is the place to start looking for the problem.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.
