has anyone ever tried painting a pedal with chalkboard paint? it caught my eye in the store today - supposed to be really tough and durable. if no ones tried it ill give it a shot for my next pedal and post the results.

Never tried, but it's a high gloss paint. Chalkboards are grinded after painting to dull the paint.
BTW: I only see black and dark green paint so far, never saw any other colour at the shop.

O

We got some to paint a "crafts" table for our 2 year old and it wasn't glossy. It came out dull and grainy and it actually has held up really well (it was sprayed on wood, not metal).

I have tried it, and it just scraped straight off, it is very matt, its ok on wood, not on boxes like we use

I didnt bake or anything though, so try it out, but id expect to be dissapointed.

My girlfriend painted a chalkboard in our place; I wouldn't say it's that much more durable than any other paint, but I do think it would do a better job shielding, perhaps on the inside of a wooden enclosure?

Hi.

I think you have to look at what it was designed for........... wood.

I would suggest that even if you primed a metal box really well it still would not be ideal.
Also do you really want matt black boxes with a grainy finish.

If you are looking for a hard wearing paint I would suggest Hammerite (UK name, think its called something different in the US) Its designed for metal and to be very hard wearing. Comes in lots of colours and textures.
The key here is preparation and priming of the box, especially if its aluminium.

Good luck

wow the possibilities, a novelty pedal.

  • mark your favorite settings in chalk so you dont forget them!
  • if you get bored you can draw something else
  • a great prototype shell, write any improvement ideas straight on the box
  • if your testing a new design its always a pain when its not fixed in a shell you could quickly write the controls on the box so you dont forget.

a great custom pedal i love it

My doughter painted their refridgerator and one door with such water based paint, cool "grunge" looks, I think it might be quite durable if it could be made to stick on alu. She painted some empty tin cans with it too, I think she did not use any primer, I must try if it is scratch resistant if I find it

But how about products like these:

ive never really found any problems with durability, unless its not prepared or painted well.

sanding metals spraying with all purpose paints giving it all time to dry, using multiple thin coats, then finish it with a sealer and they have always been fine.

what are you guys doing to your pedals to needs such durability?

A fellow named Paul Weller on the HC forum used to do that for some of his pedals when he was building (fireman fx).
Not sure if he had any problems with it though...
