I was looking at the Bazz Fuss Deluxe:

Is that transformer in place as a buffer? If so could a normal JFet buffer be subbed in its place?

Seljer

the transformer is not neccesary, you can leave it out, no buffered needed

that transformer is there to improve the sound IF there is were buffer placed in front of the fuzz by making having simulate an inductor (pickup), so it behaves differently when you lower the volume

It's intended to make a buffered signal 'look' more like a signal produced by a coil, as in guitar pickup, there is a better explanation somewhere in AMZ's labs notebook.
Convention creates following, following creates convention.

Would adding a transformer coil in front of any FF type circuit that doesn't respond good to buffered effects work the same way?

The transformer also roll off the highs so I do not think it is a good idea in a Ge FF, but maybe in a Si FF... I'm goint to try it anyway.

well if you've got a buffer in front of it, chances are you're recovering the highs that would otherwise be rolled off if you were running the guitar directly into it
