Boss BF-2 Flanger mods???

A flanger is not an effect I would use a lot so I just grabbed a BF-2 off of Craigslist for $30 instead of shelling out bucks for a much better one or getting in on the ADA or Electric Mistress builds.  This one was made in Taiwan and I assume it and the Japanese ones are more coveted due to the use of higher quality components (this one had the silver caps .....polyethylene or polpropylene...I forget)  I actually think the clean flanging doesn't sound awful and does the Andy Summers thing well.  However, I was more interested in getting the EVH or Alex Lifeson sounds although being quite aware that I did have a Boss and not an MXR or EH flanger.

The metallic sound heard when using this after a distortion is a bit overbearing.  I tried reducing the C7 and C21 caps as Mark H. suggested but this seemed to take away too much low end and too much of the flanging effect (the metallic sounds did go away though).  I was just curious if other options are available?  It seems there is mention of replacing the MN3207 with a MN3204 but I didn't know if this was a mod that would get me closer to the tones I am after or not.

Any help would be appreciated... a few searched links are below

Thanks

FYI, the C7, C21 mods have no effect at all when the res/regen is off.

I suggest you look at the BF-2B which does have less metalic sound.  Roughly,
- a delay chip with less (512) stages.  this reduces the delay time
- C7 mod (47nF to 10nF)
- C6 is reduced from 47nF to 15nF.

Now reducing the delay time can significantly reduce the metalicness.    One way to approximate this is to reduce C30 (47pF).  Unfortunately the clock frequencies are already pretty high so it's probably unwise to use a small C30 like 22pF to drop the delay to the BF-2B level.  You could try 33pF and cross your fingers.

Tune the C6 mod first to your taste with res/regen off - try say 22nF or 33nF.

Then Tune C7 using some res/regen.

Another mod is to play with C8 and C9.   For example you can get the filters to be quite close to the mxr flanger by changing only two caps:  C8 from 12nF to 2.2nF, and change C9 from 150pF to 1nF.

Awesome George!  Besides getting rid of the metallic noise I want it to play better with distortion so, hopefully your MXR filter mod will accomplish this.  Time to get out some sockets!!!
