increasing headroom

We all know by now that Way Huge pedals are basically well-built "improved" clones of other pedals.  I now read somewhere that the "improvements" from WH actually came down to creating "more headroom".  I don't even really care if that's true or not, but the concept of increasing headroom intreagues me... Can someone explain me the basics of increasing the headroom in an existing design?  I'm not having a specific pedal in mind, but is there a "standard" approach/technique to do dis?
