hi, i wanna build the dirty bird, but i can't find the NTE112.
want other diodes can i use in place of this???

Paul Perry (Frostwave)

I think that's a schottky diode.
So I'd use a BAT84 (because I have several lifetimes supplies of them). But any schottky would do, I expect.

Gila_Crisis

ok, and what exactely a schottky diode??

R.G.

A Schottky diode is a diode formed by depositing a metal layer on a doped silicon substrate so it forms what amounts to a "half diode". It still acts like a diode, but has half the forward drop and is very fast in turning on and off.

Schottky diodes would be great for everything except that the "half diode" construction makes fabrication a bit more difficult and the reverse voltage is limited. The first Schottky diodes were only a few volts for reverse blocking. Improved design gives silicon Schotty diodes with voltages up to maybe 50. I've even seen adverts for 100V Schottkys, but that was on a silicon carbide semiconductor.

The old point contact diodes, cat whisker on galena crystal and the ilk were in effect Schottky diodes.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

i founded a 1n5817, can i use that?

R.G.

Yeah, the 1N5817 is a Schottky. It's a low voltage one; in a 9v effect should be fine.

The guy at the store said he only stocked 1N5819 because same as 1N5817 an 18 just higher amperage. Didn't check the sheet though
That wouldn't be a problem in stompbox applications would it?

thanks
zj

Paul Perry (Frostwave)

No problem at all.
I must say zjoka, I'm impressed that there is an electronics store anywhere in the world where the guy behind the counter knows something!

wow, that was quite some guy for an electronic store counter...
thats smoove!
Look at it this way- everyone rags on air guitar here because everyone can play guitar.  If we were on a lawn mower forum, air guitar would be okay and they would ridicule air mowing.
