I decided to add my first ever dc jack to my 18 rog pedal. I have drilled the hole and mounted it in (wired it up) but it is grounding out on the case. This is the dc jack i have http://www.smallbearelec.com/Detail.bok?no=92.  It works fine when its not mounted in the case but like I said, when its in the case it grounds out. What do  I need to do?

Seljer

put a plastic washer in between the jack and the case to make sure they're not touching

The thing is....The threads of the jack are touching the sides of the hole that is drilled.

They say the bezel is independant of the wiring? Dunno if that's true, I don't have to worry about it cause I always use these:

I used one of those in my octavia (now in my wah though) what I did was I put some heatshrink around the threaded area (if you put too much the nut won't be able to tighten all the way so cut the length to the thickness of the enclosure) so the threads are isolated from the enclosure, than I just put some electrical tape around the hole for the DC jack on the inside and outside of the enclosure.

Here's a pic of the outside so you have an idea of what I'm talking about. The jack on the right is the DC.

You don't have to keep the elec tape that big, but just don't tighten it too much or you'll go through the tape.

I use those now as well. The only problem with those is that if for some reason you want to take out all the components you have to desolder the connections. It's not a major problem, but it would be nice to have some like those with the nut on the outside instead of the inside.

I have a few of those but only use them in plastic enclosures.

I had a question about wiring, but then i answered it when i looked at the small bear page.   :icon_redface:

Personally, I just wouldn't feel safe enough with the electrical tape and heat-shrink method described above. I put enough work in a project to make a useable pedal, I want to know that the power supply jack isn't going to short out and take something with it.

When I need to isolate a jack from a metal chassis, and I don't have a plastic-bodied jack handy, I drill the hole slightly larger than the body of the jack, fill the hole with bondo/epoxy/JB Weld, and after that's set, I sand it down flush with the surface of the enclosure, and drill a hole sized for the jack through that plug.    Steve details this method somewhere on the Smallbear site, I believe it's under "projects", and is for one of the power supply tutorials.

An easier option is fiber "shoulder washers", which I used in the past to isolate 1/4" jacks from the enclosure on amplifiers, but I don't know if there's enough thread on those jacks to actually screw them on over the added depth that creates.

But yeah, I'm all about the plastic bodied jacks mentioned above.   The inside nut has never bothered me, it's never too much of a problem to heat the lug enough to slip the wire out.  I think they look kind of classy as well.

That's a really good method. Much better than my idea LOL.

But the elec tape and heatshrink isn't as flimsy as you'd think, as long as you don't tighten the nut really hard... which you shouldn't do anyways.

I think I might try that bondo method though... just to keep it nice and clean.

here's the link it's about 1/4 of the way down.

i just wouldn't use a plug like that at all. i'd be too worried about shorting one day. too many power leads and plugs can short on stage!!! what i do is use a 3.5mm audio jack like the Proco Rat and some EHX. I use ground on the outside, so it doesn't matter when it shorts to the enclosure, and the tip is switched positive. Then it's a really easy matter of making or buying an adaptor from the 2.1mm type to a 3.5mm (which is much smaller). The polarity gets reversed in the adaptor. You could easily use a plastic 2.1mm power jack, but i like the idea of having complete shielding except for the led where i use only a 3mm with no plastic mount.

I tried using this jack and also decided the shorting problem was too risky. It would turn off my whole power supply, so that's a no-go. I just wired up a special power cable for that pedal, in the meantime.

What about this part? Why is the hole off-center in the picture ??
