I'm planning on designing a preamp for my electret microphone, and I want something that boosts the signal quite a lot. I breadboarded a few designs based on a single tl072, a single tl082, a lm386 and a few designs with some JFETS. I ran them on 12volts, but couldn't get enough gain before it started breaking up. I then stumbled across the lm 387, which takes up to 40 volts, and is intended as a low noise preamp. Anyone ever tried one of those? What is your experience with this chip?

Anyone would like to recommend an other, simple preamp design with a lot of gain?

You can run a TL072 at 36 volts, that should give plenty of headroom.
I like this preamp http://sound.westhost.com/project13.htm it's pretty simple and sounds really good and is clean. To get 30 volts I used a 24volt AC wallwart rectified and regulated using an LM317T.
