I must say, this thing is great. What I discovered, though, was that this thing makes and awesome overdrive pedal. I run it through a tube amp I built (P1 with a Champ preamp) and an 8 inch speaker. I can actually get some SRV tones out of it.

The distortion is good, too.

I have it biased to around 3.8 V, BTW. I could probably get it to sound better by tweaking it, but it's hard to play and use a screwdriver at the same time.

run it at higher voltage

Nice pedal. I recently built one i also put a switc dpdt to switch c8 cap values from .1 to 1 uf and i put a smoothing cap across the volume pot. I'm definetly loving the lower drive settings! How's that p-1 working for you i was thinking about building one myself and by the way what type of speaker did you use in it?

It's a nice amp, but it definitely isn't a P1 anymore. I used the Champ's preamp section. I used a Jensen P8R reissue. The wierd thing is, it sounds better now than when I first built it. I think it may have to do with the speaker 'breaking in' as they say.

Unfortunately, I don't have a microphone to record it with.

What output tube are you using??
I really don't like those EL84's they use, they're just too glassy for my taste, especially when they're being driven as hard as they are in a P1. Have you tried subbing in a 6V6 to get it closer to the champ sound?? It won't be exactly the same, because it's running on a lower voltage, but it's easy to do (just add an extra resistor and a socket), as long as you only run one tube at a time ;)
I'd have thought the Champ circuit would be a bit wild running into the P1 output??

I've just given mine to the new guitarist in the band and he LOVES it !!
He will however pay me the cost of all the parts at least :D
Being firstly a keyboard player/bass player, I've relieved myself of "live" guitar
duties :-(  .... I just wasn't quite cutting it, but that's fine.
I'll stick to writing/recording with guitar.
We've just found a second guitar player from Portugal who is a genius !!
Nailed all the parts with great tone and timing to die for :D
He's a REAL find  !

I am using an EL84. Putting a 6V6 in there would be impossible; my chassis does not have enough room. Not to mention I would have to drill a new hole for the socket and other stuff.

I did have a problem with oscillation at first, but I fixed it with some shielded wire. I think I might use coaxial cable next time, but I am not sure.
