what to do to the jawari to get it to work with my junky guitar?

howdy,
right now it's sounding similar to a green ringer.
all the parts i used are the proper ones except i substituted
a 2n5486 for the j201 ,many different jfets were tried with
the same results. i read something about tweeking the input
stage but i'm not exactly sure what components make up the
input stage. any help would be appreciated.

i know there are very few components and i
could easily socket them all and experiment
but i'd appreciate if someone familiar with
this circuit could tell me what makes up the
input stage. please.
