I was messing around with a clipper like the SS diode clipper on that page:

I never played with it enough to get an impression either way.  The clipping stage was being followed by a common source JFET amp, and I was having trouble correctly biasing the JFET, so the sounds I was hearing were not very fair representations of the series diode clipper itself.

I would expect that this kind of clipper would be good because it blocks out potential noise from the power supply when an op amp hits the rail, among other ugly things that happen with a saturated op amp.

Didn't we thrash through that circuit a couple of years ago? Memory is dim.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

The ether is misty, but I vaguely remember something like that.  I'm pretty sure it's a discussion like what you're referring to that inspired me to try it the first time.

There's a thread from last year by Joe Davisson about this, unfortunately the schematics he posted seem to have disappeared but there's still some good stuff in the thread. http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=48507.0
