G'day!

A while ago I built an ab box for a gift for a friend and he's just recently started using it as a tuner mute. All good except that he reckons that even when it's on tuner the signal is still faintly going through to the rest of the pedals... I'm getting it in tomorrow and having a look at it but is there anything I should specifically look for first?

it's wired up simply. It's a dpdt footswitch; one side is the two leds and ground, the other is connected with a and b at the top and bottom with the in/out in the middle.

Any advice anyone can share is much appreciated!

Is that a plastic washing basket?

Unless the switch is bad, I think the problem is that you've got the hot for the amp output hanging there when it's side is "muted."  In fact, it's not really muted but unconnected.  Pretty much just hanging there acting as an antenna.  The sure way to fix this, no matter what the actual problem, would be to use a 3PDT (if you must have the led's, can't the guy tell by ear which side is connected?) and grounding the output that's not being used.  Put ground on the common of the new pole and the other lugs get crisscrossed jumpers from the the old pole.
