ROG Whisker Biscuit - finally !!!

Had a veroboard done about 6 months ago and never wired up the pots and
i/o jacks 
Just took me 15 minutes and it sounds real good .... HUGE even !!
A nice alternative to a BMPi and somewhat simpler too.
I know it's an "old one" from ROG , but nice work chaps, great circuit and
a good range of big FAT fuzz tones

 Yeah, I love the sound of this thing, but the noise is something else... Gotta be real quick with the footswitch...

I was thinkin' of combining this with the Noseburner to have a 3 knob (and even more BMP-ish, possibly quieter) version, but never got around to it...

I wasn't aware of a noise problem !!
Have some "hum" from single coils but otherwise its A-OK !
( less hum with tone pot more towards treble side BTW )
I did an extremely tight layout also, 4cm X 2cm
Base bias to ground r's are 82k not 100k (measured 87k), input r 39k not 33k and
"velvet" caps are 68pf not 47pf - all I had , but may make some difference.
All else " as-is " and 0.1uf caps are cheap tiny ceramic's.
Added 47uf/100n PS filter and a reverse protection diode, ground rail bottom strip
and also the one next to the top 9v rail too.

It does get that HUGE BM sound and there's a sweet spot on the tone control when it's
in a real nice FF area too.
Fairchild 5088's and MPSA13 used, pots 24mm Alpha's both Log A

Bit smoother IMO, not quite as " spikey " as those clips, same ball park though.

 Hmmm... I used mpsa18 instead of 2n5088... maybe that's why all the hiss...(I strayed... again). But I would think that would only lower potential noise. They are low noise, high gain, right? Maybe too much gain though...
Also, possibly(maybe not though) because I used mostly ceramic caps in that one... I like ceramics in a BMP(silly, I know), so...

Just tryin'to figure out the noise... I waited to respond, because I really like the sound of this thing, didn't want to cut it down if it's just me... but it ain't. Would be nice to nail down the cause... we have 2 with noise, one without... comparison might shed some light.

One thing worth noting- I did not include the 'velvet' caps... that might be it right there!

I never tried this although I've been tempted to give it a shot.  I wasn't aware that it was noisy but I might try it.  I'll have to buy some mpsa18 though.  I really like the ROG builds that I have done.  My first build was the Big Daddy but I never got it working right.  I was new to building and didn't know how to fix it at the time.  The builds I've done are:

Mockman
Ruby
All sound great so the Whisker I suspect will sound great.

I have built a couple of WB's in my time.
I never really noticed too much noise [compared to BMP].  I just AB'ed my WB with my op amp BMP in my basement. Both had pretty similar noise floors when the fuzz gets past 3 o'clock or so.  I should mention that I am using battery power. The WB cleans up much better than any muff with the guitar volume.  If I had to say what BMP the WB reminds me of most,  I would have to go with the green Russian tank ones. It must be the tonestack?

I dint use a BMP in my live rig, but I seem to use them on allot of recordings.

Oh yes, my faveorite BMP varient!

i LOVE this build, it has all that the EH bmp has to offer- WITHOUT all the draw-backs. 

i built my "main" one with a mids control (50K pot)  . 

Has anyone built the NOse-burner eh?  How does it sound?

I believe when I breadboarded mine I used the 47pf "smooth" caps but it was still noisy. It sounded great when playing. It's been a while since I've breadboarded this thing, maybe it's time to revisit it.
